Overwater Bungalows-Where They Are in the World?

When it comes to interesting and offbeat staying options like Overwater Bungalows, the following kinds of accommodations come to our mind:

  • Treehouse
  • Overwater bungalows
  • Boathouse
  • Floating hotels
  • Forest bamboo lodge
  • Motorhomes
  • Canvas Tents

I would say all are good staying options. These days, even canvas tents put up on open grounds come with all the basic and modern facilities such as cooking under the sky, public washrooms, and a mini grocery and vegetables shop.

Of all the above offbeat kind of lodging facilities, we will focus on “overwater bungalows” today. I think the word ‘bungalows’ is a bit of exaggeration. It is proper to name them as ‘Overwater Huts’ or ‘overwater cottages’. What do you say?

When our holiday destination is a coastal town, we would definitely prefer to stay as close to the seafront as possible-right?

What else can be an exciting idea than staying on top of the sea itself than staying in hotels that give us a sea-view room?

An over the water cottage sounds more thrilling and memorable than an ocean-side accommodation-eh?

Laucala Island, Fiji

A group of three islands in Fiji offers the ultimate Overwater Bungalows in the world. The three islands are:

  • Laucala
  • Matagi
  • Qamea

The resort that offers the Overwater Bures (bungalows) is Likuliku Lagoon Resort.

Look at the image below. It shows the view of the Pacific Ocean from inside the Overwater Bungalow.

This can be called an overwater villa if not overwater bungalow because the area of the accommodation is 3000 sq.ft! It is a duplex type of Overwater Cottage.

The way the architect has designed is ingenious as the ocean is visible from wherever you stand in the overwater villa that is termed as ‘bure’ in this part of the world.

You can choose to book your overwater villa either on Laucala Island or Malolo Island or Matangi Island. You would spend the ultimate holiday of your lifetime in these overwater villas in Polynesian Islands.

Overwater Bungalows

The archipelago that comprises as many as 20 islands including our subject Laucala Island is Mamanuca Islands.

These islands are beautiful beyond description, folks. For once, forget about Bali, Maldives, or Maui in Hawaii. Plan your unforgettable island getaway in Polynesia and Fiji.

All these islands in South Pacific are located close by only and can be quickly reached on a speedboat. If you make your headquarters in either Viti Levu or Vanua Levu, your island hoping gets very easy.

The Likuliku Lagoon Resort’s reception lobby itself is on a canoe that is rebuilt to function as a resort front office lobby.

The overwater bures built traditionally using wood mainly with a thatched roof.

Overwater Huts in Bora Bora.

Bora Bora is another island in the South Pacific. It is a French Polynesian Island.

Look at the image below and then decide whether your next island destination is Bora Bora or any other Canadian or Indonesian islands.

See the water! It is so very clear that the two men standing on a surfboard look as if they are floating. Their image on the turquoise water is absolutely clear creating that floating impression.

The resort run by Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts offers a wide range of accommodations including the overwater huts.

Don’t be afraid of Mount Otemanu; it is a volcano all right but dormant.

Overwater Bungalows, Niyama Private Islands, Maldives

How will you feel if you are allocated a private butler at your service during your stay in one of these overwater bungalows that come with two bedrooms and a private deck where you are treated to an open-air barbeque? Won’t you want to return to this out of the world fantasy again and again? Think about it after going through the website and read about the facilities and amenities offered at this private island resort in the Maldives.

I am excited at the open-to-sky shower cubicle in the overwater cottage. Where else can you experience such a luxury than in an overwater bungalow where there is absolute privacy?

COMO Overwater Cottage, Cocoa Island, Maldives

Cocoa Island Maldives

How about accessing your cottage built over the water by walking on a private pier? That would be the experience of your life!

A 5-star resort run by the COMO group of hotels. The view must be scintillating and the food is said to be the freshest seafood. These types of over the water accommodations are privacy personified and are absolutely ideal for honeymooners. A whole family too can enjoy a great and memorable holiday if they choose to stay in one of the overwater villas.

Overwater Bungalows, Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia.

Song Saa

Ah, for a change, we move away from the well-known Maldives, French Polynesia, and Tahiti Islands. We are now in Cambodia where no one imagined such a luxury of staying in a thatched roof hut built on the Gulf of Thailand.

The Overwater Huts seem to have built close to the island’s shore. You can reach this resort located in Song Saa private island by riding on a speedboat for half an hour from Sihanoukville, a coastal city in Cambodia.

There are 9 Overwater Villas in Song Saa island which itself is situated very close to another island called Koh Bong that you can go to by just walking across a bridge.

I think it is appropriate to call these small private islands as islets.

One more location of Overwater Bungalows is again in Maldives’ Niyama Private Islands that are located in Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives. Not much details are found on the web other than their website

So, how do you feel about staying in an Overwater Bungalow in an island of Maldives, Polynesia, Tahiti or Cambodia?

Bungalows or villas or huts are a nice and unique idea. It would be nice to stay in them for a few nights.
