In this post, you will learn about tremendous attractions that should be included in the giant list of African Wonders. The additions are much less known to the world.
-
Laikipia, Kenya
Scroll up to the beginning of this post, watch the video clip with wide eyes, and come back here to learn more about Laikipia.
Laikipia is a region in North Kenya. The terrain is wild and diverse. You can see the true colors of African Wonders in just one place, and that is Likipia. The area comprises vast stretches of wilderness, wildlife viewing reserves, tribal settlements, and ranches.
Did the video give a glimpse of Laikipia’s features?
Some call Laikipia, a second Masai Mara. But this region in Northern Kenya is much more pristine. Laikipia is certainly a lesser-known African Wonder.
When you go to this part of Kenya in East Africa, you will notice the lack of tourist crowds. This is good for the unspoiled ecology.
Apart from a worrying population of elephants, the wildlife comprises some of the most endangered species.
For example, the number of ‘black leopards’ is alarmingly diminishing.
Black Leopard aka Black Panther. I have not seen this beauty in any zoo.
A few other animals that are enlisted in endangered animals can be spotted here in the region of Laikipia.
- Somali Ostrich
- Grevy’s Zebra
For us, all ostriches, and zebras look the same-right?
The Kenyan Government in collaboration with its neighboring countries, is trying to establish a very large sanctuary for the African Rhinoceros. The expected sanctuary is going to be as large as 840k acres!
Wait for its opening in Suyian Lodge in Kenya. It is a very important wildlife viewing spot in all of Africa.
The location of Laikipia is between Mount Kenya, and the Great Rift Valley, North Kenya.
You can join the usual African Safaris, and also can experience a night safari, during which, the big cats; eyes scare us.
Another fantastic experience is to go for a hot air balloon safari. The landscape below, the movement of wildlife, and the simmering mirages will be exactly as shown in the films.
Forest lodges provide both boarding and lodging. This is where, you can taste, the real and very authentic African cuisine.
Bush Meal
Have you heard about the “Bush Meal”? It is your chance to taste it here. The dining table ( sometimes, you hold your plate in your hands) will be set up under the sky. Hearing the distant roar of the big cats, you can enjoy a delicious lunch.
The cooking is done in front of you, out in the open.
You can be assured of the ‘smoky’ flavor in the food.
Mount Kenya is in the northwest, and the Great Rift Valley is in northeast Kenya.
-
Gurara Falls, Nigeria
Many people are of the opinion that Nigeria is unsafe for tourists. It is an old notion; the scenario is different now. The country receives as many as 5 to 6 million international visitors annually.
Gurara Falls is almost 200 meters wide. That will be beautiful, and you will have to open your eyes as wide as possible.
The height from which the water falls is roughly 100 feet!
Here is another view of the Gurara Waterfalls.
The Gurara River is the source of the waterfalls.
It’s a roadside attraction in Niger State, Nigeria.
-
Simien National park, Ethiopia

The Simien Mountains are protected under the UNESCO World Heritage status.
The area comprises jaw-dropping gorges, high-altitude summits, and unheard-of wildlife that can exist only in Africa.
Gelada Baboons, Ethiopian Wolves, and Waha Ibex can be included in the list of lesser-known African Wonders.
Gelada Baboon-OMG! What a unique primate!
Waha Ibex-look at its long and curved horns!
The dramatic and changing landscapes, and the rare forest animals compel us to name the place, a big tourist attraction in Africa,
For once, we can say that Ethiopia is rich in natural beauty.
Ras Dashan is the tallest peak in Ethiopia, inside the Simien National Park. The summit is situated at a colossal height of nearly 15,000 feet!
If you have no phobia of heights, try to trek at least for a day, for breathtaking views, and lush forests.
There are 3 or 4 guided trekking expeditions, but I think, the minimum period involves 3 days.
-
Sossusvlei, Namibia
The blinding reddish-orange sand dunes are known as Sossusvlei Dunes. It is an African Wonder, and it exists right in the middle of the Namib Desert, Namibia.
Watching the sun rise above the horizon from one of the tallest sand dunes is a lifetime thrill and excitement.
Man, isn’t your exclusive trip to the Namib Desert worth the time and money?
Fascinating features of Namib Desert:
- The desert’s length is a mind-boggling 1600 km!
- 16 km is its maximum width
- It occupies a land area of a whopping 160k sq. Km
The Namib Desert stretches into the neighboring Angola, and South Africa countries.
I would add the great Namib Desert also in the list of African Wonders, but it is already well-known as such.
-
Erta Ale, Ethiopia
Who is smoking? Ah, it is a type of volcano ‘Erta Ale’ means ‘smoking mountain’. It is always active but it seems it is not spewing molten lava that causes the destruction.
This African Wonder is seen in an area known as Danakil Depression. This infamous geological attraction is located on the border of Eritrea, an east African nation.
The Danakil Depression is situated below the sea level.
There is a glowing (simmering) lava lake beneath the mouth of the volcano.
Despite this fact, people trek up to the 2000-foot-high crater and look down the mouth to see the live lava lake.
The sight can be thrilling and worth your trek.
-
Jade Sea, Kenya
Jade Sea is the nickname of Lake Turkana in Kenya. Find out why below.
Why this saline lake is considered an African Wonder? Notice the color again. You will see a rare blusih-green color. The lake is hence nicknamed as, “Jade Sea”.
Lake Turkana is located in northern Kenya. The 290 km long lake with 32 km width, is a perennial lake in a desert but very saline.
Surprisingly, despite the water’s high salinity, many fish species like this habitat.
Consequently, to eat them, there are rare birds that always hover over the lake.
The lake’s geology, marine life, and avifauna beckon marine biologists to the lake throughout the year.
The lake is fed by three rivers. The fact that is surprising is, all the 3 rivers drain pure water into the Lake Turkana.
Some part of the lake flows into Ethiopia.
The lake’s shores are habitat to three very dangerous creatures, namely the Nile Crocodiles, Carpet Vipers (snakes), and the deadly-looking scorpions.
Due to the lake’s salinity, its wildlife, and geological properties, a national park was carved out called Lake Turkana National Park. The UNESCO attached the World Heritage Site tag to the national park.
There is an island in the lake where numerous Nile Crocodiles live. Along with them, the African Skimmers also live.
Despite being a unique African attraction, not many tourists take the trouble of driving for two hours from Nairobi to this site.
-
Tassili n’Ajjer, Algeria
The stunning place is full of sandstone rocks, and caves that contain some amazing artwork that dates back to prehistoric times.
The video below will reveal why the place is one of the African Wonders.
The rock formations are absolutely incredible and unique. You can find the walls of the rock also have artworks on them.
Obviously, this is not for luxury travelers. You have to walk long after dumping your luggage on the back of the silently-enduring donkeys.
Nonetheless, the Sahara Desert’s landscape will be interesting.
Admittedly, the place is not easily accessed. You have to fly up to Algiers City first. Then, fly domestically to a town called Djanet.
From Djanet, you have to hire a taxi. As you saw in the video, the 130 km distance journey can be arduous. A guide must accompany you.
Since you have made a bit of effort to reach the desert area, it is advisable to stay overnight and explore the attractions fully. Tents are the best options to spend the night.
After seeing the extraordinary sandstone rock formations, I believe, 8000+ tourists annually is a very poor number.
-
Tsingy de Bemaraha, Madagascar
We have come to another site where the rock formations are the main attractions. However, here, the rocks are made of limestone which is quite brittle.
It is an astonishing site that is full of thousands of limestone rock formations.
For a change, we leave mainland Africa and go to Madagascar Island in the Indian Ocean.
The dramatic and unique geological formation got its UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Apart from the needle-like karts, you can explore pristine forests that very few people visit.
The remotely located forests support some wonderful wildlife that includes birds that we have heard of, reptiles they feed, fossa (cat), and lemurs.
There is a special mention of Antstingy Leaf Chameleon which is another endemic reptile.
Antstingy Leaf Chameleon.
I thought all chameleons’ bases are leaves.
Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park has two sites of rock formations, namely:
- The Great Tsingy
- The Little Tsingy
The difference is the accessibility, the former being tough to reach.
Guides know the area. You will be taken to the beautiful site of Tsiribihina River around which, you can spot some endemic birds.
Why not, even small ants that live there would not live anywhere else on the planet. So, every living being on this highly-visited island can be endemic. I meant the plant life too.
Allocate another day to see some more breathtaking sites and to eat the famous Madagascar cuisine.
The Avenue of Baobas is one more wonderful sights on the island.
Wow! This is a rare tree and the grove certainly attracts tourists from mainland Africa,
-
Lake Malawi, Malawi
As one of the African Wonders, Lake Malawi is known for its crystal-clear water. Additionally, it is rated as a biodiverse region.
The lake is ever pregnant with rich, and diverse marine species. The lake is said to be a habitat for the highest number pf fish species and no other lake in the world can match Lake Malawi.
Can you believe if I say that this lake invites snorkelers who generally get into a sea wearing snorkel mask?
To see this great lake, you have to go to Malawi, an East African country. Its 560 km length and 75 km breadth stretches the lake into Tanzania, and Mozambique.
This means, that if you are touring Tanzania to see the Great Migration in Masai Mara, you can take a day off and go to see Lake Malawi.
Malawi’s earlier name was Nyasaland and the lake too was called Lake Nyasa.
The lake has islands, beaches, and incredibly beautiful surroundings. Therefore, the region is called Lake Malawi National Park.
Incidentally, it is a World Heritage Site, tagged by UNESCO. Lodges, and cottages around the lake offer boarding and lodging. The nearest city is Mangochi. But the distance of nearly 300 km is certainly not near to the lake-eh? Well, Mangochi itself is located 240 km east of the country’s capital Lilongwe.
However, you may not notice the distance because you drive through a beautiful landscape.
A few water sports are available in Lake Malawi including, kayaking, guided boat tours, snorkeling, and of course fishing.
As an added attraction, you can make a brief stop at Liwonde National Park and spend a few hours spotting terrific wildlife such as:
- African Buffalo
- Common Eland
- Sable Antelope
- Kudu
The list is quite lengthy, and I am not going into it deep.
-
Okavango Delta, Botswana
I am sure you have not heard about it before despite the fact that it is one of the rich wildlife safari areas in Botswana.
The river delta during the rainy season turns into an ideal wetland that attracts a number of birds, elephants, rhinos, and more.
Just seek a guide to go to the Moreni Game Reserve, on the other side of the river delta, and you are in for the surprise of your life. Even UNESCO officers were taken aback by the diversity and rice wildlife and declared it a World Heritage Site.
As a matter of fact, the Okavango Delta is included in the list of 7 Natural Wonders of Africa.
Mokoro Safari takes you through the Okovango River, among the small islands. It is a lifetime experience.
In addition, you can opt for a helicopter tour of the Okavango Delta. You will get a different picture
It is truly an exceptional wildlife-watching opportunity.
-
The Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique
Had you visited Mauritius, and Madagascar before, and fully explored their inexplicable natural beauty, you know that there is no match for the diversely beautiful African islands?
They are the ultimate natural attractions in the world. Even the Caribbean Islands are ranked below the islands in Africa.
The Quirimbas Archipelago comprising 32 islands is scattered over 400 km. All of them are floating in the Indian Ocean and located between Pemba Island, and Tanzania’s coast.
Some of the popular islands that you can go to are:
- Mateno
- Ibo
- Vamizi
Vamizi Island is where you should stay in one of the many eco-lodges. The beaches wear white sand drapes.
- Quirimba
- Medjumbe
- Rolas
These African Islands are where you can learn so much about the culture of native Africans. Their way of life is astonishing.
This part of the Indian Ocean’s marine biology is rich with untouched corals. The shores of the islands host thick mangrove forests, which are excellent habitats for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and myriad invertebrates.
The main activities that you can indulge in when you reach Quirimbas Island include interacting with the native Africans and go Dhow Safari in the Indian Ocean.
-
Lake Bogoria, Kenya
It is a lesser-known African Wonder. What is the wonder aspect here? The hundreds and hundreds of Lesser Flamingos that prey on myriad wetland insects, small fish species, etc. are the wonder aspect.
This is a Ramsar Site that is marked as an exclusive birding area.
Lake Bogoria is a saline lake that is a favourite of the flamingos.
In addition, you can see a few bubbling spots in the lake and they are natural geysers.
It is amazing that the hot springs exist amidst the cool waters of the lake. The video showed some other aquatic birds that are happy to live with their larger counterparts.
-
Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana
This is the site of a very large lake that has now dried up completely. Consequently, there is nothing but an endless stretch of salt pans. The 30,000 sq.km area is so flat that you can recognize the curve of the earth.
The wonder aspect is, the lake became bone dry up thousands of years ago.
Surprisingly, the desolate landscape transforms into a marshland, which attracts thousands of flamingos that prey on insects that suddenly show up.
The large number of Flamingos in one spot is an amazing sight.
The giant-sized Wildebeests are also spotted on the wet salt pan.
Here is an amazing fact. The expansive wilderness is so vast that the area is in utter darkness without any artificial lights, lighting the area, in the night.
This provides the rare opportunity to star gaze, including the Milky Way.
You can ride on a quad bike on the flat salt pans.
I think Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the must-see African Wonders.
Botswana is a big country, and the Makgadikgadi Pan is too large an area to visualize. There are three gateways to enter the flat pan.
- Nata
- Gweta
- Maun
Goborone, the capital city of Botswana is 450 km away from the site Makgadikadi Pans.
Out of these 13 African Wonders, which is your first choice to visit?
